What to Expect in Your First Class

If you’re new to Pilates, stepping into your first class can feel both exciting and a hell of a lot intimidating (trust me, I've been there). Whether you’re joining to build strength, improve flexibility, or support your overall wellbeing, knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and ready to get the most out of your session. At Pilates With Fatou, I welcome beginners and love helping you start your journey.


Pilates classes typically begin with a warm welcome and a brief introduction. Your instructor will ask about any injuries or concerns, so be sure to mention anything that might affect your movement. Most classes start with gentle breathing exercises and foundational movements to help you connect with your body and activate your core muscles. You’ll move through a series of guided exercises, either on a mat or the reformer, with plenty of modifications available for all levels.





You don’t need any special equipment for your first class-just comfortable, fitted clothing that allow you to move freely, grip socks, and a mat if you're taking a mat Pilates class (this typically depends on the studio, most studios provide mats). Most studios, practice Pilates barefoot for mat class or in grip socks for stability on the reformer. Bring a water bottle and an open mind. If you’re unsure about anything, your instructor is there to guide you and answer questions.


Expect to feel muscles you didn’t even know you had! Pilates emphasizes controlled, precise movements and mindful breathing, which can feel different from other workouts. After class, you might notice improved posture, a sense of relaxation, and a gentle soreness in your core and supporting muscles. With regular practice, you’ll build strength, flexibility, and confidence in your body.
