How to Get Started with Pilates: A Simple Guide for Beginners

Deciding to start Pilates is a fantastic step toward building a stronger, more balanced body. If you’re curious about how to begin, you’re not alone, cause I was once there myself. Many people wonder how to take that first step, what they need, and how to make the most of their Pilates journey. At Pilates With Fatou, I'm here to make starting Pilates simple and enjoyable.


The first thing to know is that Pilates is for everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or experience. You don’t need to be flexible or have a background in exercise to benefit from Pilates. Begin by researching local studios or online classes that fit your schedule and comfort level. Look for certified instructors who can guide you safely and answer your questions along the way.





Before your first class, wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move easily. Most Mat Pilates classes are done barefoot however grip socks are a MUST for Reformer Pilates, so there’s no need for special shoes. Bring a water bottle and, if you’re attending in person, arrive a few minutes early to meet your instructor and discuss any injuries or goals you have, as well as to sign you waiver. If you're taking a mat Pilates class, you may want to bring your own mat, however most studios have mats you can borrow during class but always call ahead of time to make sure.


In class, focus on learning the basics: breathing, core engagement, and proper alignment. Don’t worry if the movements feel unfamiliar at first, Pilates is about progress, not perfection. Consistency is key, so try to attend classes regularly, even if it’s just once or twice a week. Over time, you’ll notice improvements in your strength, flexibility, and posture.
